What to do in William Mitchell State Park

The 334-acre Mitchell State Park was officially dedicated in 1919. A historic canal connects the two lakes and runs directly through the park. The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center showcases the history of hunting and fishing in Michigan.

Located between Cadillac and Mitchell Lakes, William Mitchell State Park is a popular year-round destination. It offers a great camping atmosphere with 270 modern sites, many in shaded, wooded areas. The campground has a boat launch, and a playground for the campers' enjoyment. The park has one mini-cabin, which is located on Lake Cadillac within the confines of the campground. The cabin is designed to sleep four, with bunks and mattresses provided. The cabin has electricity, a fire ring, table with four chairs and a picnic table. The overnight facilities are available all year.

There are boat launch facilities on Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell that allow easy access to water sports and fishing activity. Both lakes are noted as fine walleye fisheries and are popular fishing areas during the summer. The 1,150-acre Lake Cadillac is an extremely popular attraction and anglers can expect good catches of perch, walleye, pan fish, and bass. The quarter-mile canal that connects the two lakes is a popular place for children to shore fish in the park, and in the evening, many can do well landing bullheads.

The day use area is located on Lake Mitchell offering a sandy beach, picnic area, picnic shelter, and playground equipment.

The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center is located in the park and is a great attraction for visitors of all ages. The center is open year-round and has interpretive displays, seminars, audio-visual presentations and workshops for visitors to enjoy. A 2.5-mile nature trail enlightening visitors about the area's wildlife begins at the center.

Snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are all common winter recreational activities in the area.

There are several local festivals that are held throughout different times of year. There is a Snowmobile Festival, Art Festival, Car Show, Northern District Fair, and a Free Fishing Weekend.
