What to do in Wildcat Mountain State Park

In 1948 Amos Theodore Saunders donated a mere 40 acres of land to the state of Wisconsin for the enjoyment of all its citizens. Today Wildcat Mountain State Park boasts 3,643 acres located on a ridge rising steeply above the meandering Kickapoo River. This picturesque park is open all year with many facilities handicapped accessible.

Wildcat Mountain State Park features several recreation opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. A trail system accommodates varied users including 26 miles for the hiker, 15 miles for the horseback rider, 7 miles to the cross-country skier and a 1 mile path along a nature trail. Trail passes are required for equestrians 16 years of age and older.

The park offers several overnight choices including a 30-site family campground featuring showers and drinking water during the warmer season. A 24-site campground suites the equestrian while 3 large sites accommodate youths and other organized groups. Canoeists will find their own primitive riverside sites. The launch for canoeists is located near Hemlock Trail. Canoe rentals are available in the Village of Ontario. Winter camping is also permitted at the park. Camping reservations are available online or by calling a toll-free reservation number. Contact information is listed below.

A nature center enlightens visitors about their surroundings through exhibits and seasonal programs. An observation point overlooks the Kickapoo Valley. Both picnic and camp areas are handicapped accessible.

Visitors will find campsites, hiking trails, horse trails, scenic views, canoeing opportunities, and cross-country skiing in winter.
