Wharton State Forest Canoeing Travel Tips
- This state forest measures over 100,000 acres and offers not only canoeing but also hiking, camping, and historical interpretation. The four primary canoeing water courses here are the Mullica, Batsto, Wading, and Oswego Rivers.
- The Mullica River offers both day and overnight paddling adventures as it passes through savanna marshes and high sandy banks with cedars, pines, and aquatic flowering plants on its lower stretches. It has 48 miles of state designated canoe trail.
- The Batsto River offers solitude among the cedars and marshes, but crossing Batsto Lake can be a drag. Twenty miles of the river is state designated canoe trail.
- The small Wading River, 11 miles of which comprise a state canoe trail, can be very crowded in summer. Occasional sandy banks among the cedars, pines, and oaks make for good stopping points.
- The Oswego River can be shallow as it travels through cedar bogs, ponds, and more riverine stretches. A popular run heads 7.7 miles between Oswego Lake and Harrisville Lake.

Wharton State Forest is the largest single tract of land within the New Jersey State Park System.
