What to do in Wellesley Island State Park

Wellesley Island State Park is located 6 miles west of Alexandria Bay along the shores of the St. Lawrence River offering secluded campsites, a cabin area and even a group camping area. The recreation bar, swimming beach, Minna Anthony Common Nature Center, the nearly century old 9-hole golf course and a network of multi-use trails, attract all ages and abilities to this year-round park.

Wellesley Island State Park has the largest camping complex in the Thousand Islands region. Secluded wilderness sites nestled along the banks of the St. Lawrence River are accessible only by foot or boat. For the less rugged camper, there are regular tent / trailer sites and a cabin colony, including facilities for group camping. Within this rustic paradise, fishing is excellent–particularly for muskie in autumn. To accommodate boaters, the park has a marina and four boat launches. A sandy beach on the river offers great swimming and sunbathing and there is a recreation barn and an 80-year old 9-hole golf course on the Island. One of the main attractions of the park is the Minna Anthony Common Nature Center, which includes a museum, varied habitats such as wooded wetlands, 3 miles of shoreline and open granite outcrops, and miles of trails for hiking, cross-country skiing and nature education. The Nature Center provides educational and recreational programs for all ages. One special feature at the nature center is the 1/4 mile handicapped trail that includes access to picnic tables and the seasonal butterfly house.

Wellesley Island State Park offers a swimming beach, bike trails, hiking trails, a nature trail, boat rental, boat launch site, power boating, fishing, marina, dockage, campground for tents and RVs,a group campground, a cabin area, a nature center, recreation programs, a children's playground and a 9-hole golf course. The park is open year round. Deer and waterfowl hunting are permitted in season. Many of the day use and overnight facilities are handicapped accessible.

The 80-year old golf course offers a practice chipping area, a practice green, pro shop, showers and snack bar. Green fees are $9 during the week and $10 on weekends. Power carts rent for $8 for 9-holes.

Wellesley Island State Park is located 6 miles west of Alexandria Bay along the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Access is off Interstate 81, Exit 51. Turn right at off-ramp and then right onto County Route 100. Continue straight approximately two miles.

The Wellesley Island State Park area has a varied climate with average January temperatures ranging from below 14 degrees reaching to 22 degrees Fahrenheit (below -10 to -6 degrees Celsius). Summer temperatures average between 72 degrees and below 68 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to below 20 degrees Celsius).
