National Scenic Byways and Other Recreational Drives
Scenic overlooks, wildlife and Native American history in this austere Great Plains park.
Lewis and Clark Trail
A two-week family outing following in the footsteps of America's two greatest adventurers.
The highlights of the 111-km (69-mile) byway include the spectacular Black Hills and Mount Rushmore. The rugged terrain, massive granite outcroppings, and diversity of the landscape are traversed by and through pigtail bridges and narrow tunnels. Wildlife abounds in the mountains that are intermingled with pine, spruce, birch, and aspen trees.
The Spearfish Canyon Highway passes through 20 miles of narrow canyon on the Black Hills National Forest and features views of several mountain peaks with slopes forested with pine, spruce, aspen, and birch; Bridal Veil Falls; and remnants of old mines and mining communities.
