An Upstate State of Mind

Day 1
Storm King Art Center via the Palisades Interstate Parkway:
From Manhattan, take the Henry Hudson Parkway to the upper level of the George Washington Bridge and merge right onto the Palisades Interstate Parkway north. After about 40 miles, the parkway ends in Bear Mountain State Park. When you hit the traffic circle, take the 4th exit onto US-9W heading north to Newburgh/West Point. Exit toward CR-107/Quaker Ave, turn left at Quaker Ave and then right on Rt. 32. Turn left at CR-20/Orrs Mills Rd and another left at Old Pleasant Hill Rd.

To New Paltz:
From Storm King, backtrack to Quaker Avenue and merge right on Rt. 9W North. Drive about 23 miles and turn left on Rt. 299. Follow it six miles into downtown New Paltz.

Day 2
From New Paltz to the Gunks:
Go west on Main St./Rt. 299 for eight miles. Turn left on Rt. 45/55 and search for parking on the way up the winding road.

Day 3
From New Paltz to the Mohonk Mountain House via Rosendale and High Falls:
From Main Street, turn right on Springtown Road, which leads you to the town of Rosendale. Turn left on Rt. 213 towards High Falls. Turn left on Mohonk Road/Rt. 6A (continue a bit further down to check out High Falls) and follow signs to the Gatehouse.

Day 4
New Paltz to Bolton Landing:
Take Rt. 299 east to I-87 N. Drive north for about two hours. Take exit 22/Rt. 9N towards Lake George Village. Continue on Rt. 9N for nine miles into Bolton Landing. To rent a kayak look for the Lake George Kayak Co. store located on Main Street, just across from the Grand Union Family Market. To get to their boat house, which is also the put-in, take Rt. 9N to Sagamore Road. Take first left turn pastthe Sagamore Gatehouse.

Day 5
Bolton Landing to Keene Valley:
Head north on Rt. 9N. Turn left on Riverbank Road and after five miles, merge right onto I-87. Drive past Schroon Lake on the Adirondack Northway (I-87) for about 40 minutes. Take Exit 30 to Rt. 73 towards Keene Valley. This takes you to Keene Valley's Main Street, about 12 miles up the road.

The Garden trailhead:
From Keene Valley Main Street, turn onto Johns Brook Lane. After 0.6 miles, the road turns sharply right as it crosses over the stream. Bear left at two forks. The road turns to gravel and dead ends at the Garden, where there is parking for about 60 cars.

Day 7
Keene Valley to Manhattan via Lake Placid/Adirondacks loop:
Take Rt. 73 north for about 20 miles to Lake Placid. On the way there, look for signs for the MacKenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex, the Freestyle Arial Training Center, and the Olympic Sports Complex, all located just off Rt. 78 before you hit Lake Placid. The ORDA STORE is located at 2426 Main Street in downtown Lake Placid. From Lake Placid, take Rt. 86 to Saranac Lake, Rt. 3 to Tupper Lake, Rt. 30 to Blue Mountain Lake, and Rt. 28 east to I-87. Drive south on I-87 for 3.75 hours to get back to the city.
