On the Road
If time allows on your return to Manhattan, loop through the region's charming lake towns (Placid, Saranac, Tupper, and Indian) before connecting with the interstate at Lake George. From there, a straight shot on I-87 will have you back in NYC in about 3.5 hours. But even if you only have seven days for on-the-road exploration, definitely cut over to Lake Placid and check out this scenic, sport-centric tourist spot before for aiming the hood ornament toward the Big Apple.

A Bit of History
Lake Placid sits on the shores of lovely Mirror Lake and still glows a particular shade of gold (especially at sunset) from its past Olympic glories. It was the site of the 1932 and the far-more-celebrated 1980 Olympic Winter Games, when the underdog U.S. hockey team beat the Russians during the heady days of the Cold War. Led by coach Herb Brooks, the team of amateurs executed what's now referred to as "The Miracle on Ice" by scoring a decisive win against the top-ranked team. The town hasn't stopped celebrating this claim to fame, and offers a variety of Olympic-themed activities for tourists at the Olympic Sports Complex. Meanwhile, nearby Whiteface Mountain Resort gives you a chance to get your own blood pumping with lift-access downhill mountain biking and hiking.

Highlight: The Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex
The towering, 120-foot MacKenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex sits just off Route 78, accessible by chairlift and elevator, giving you a dizzying view of the ramp from the ski-jumper's point of view. Just next door, freestyle skiers and snowboards train year round on intense jumps that drop into a 750,000-gallon pool. The Olympic Sports Complex, also off Route 78, has a slew of activities from summer bobsledding to virtual reality simulations of some of the more thrilling winter sports. All activities may not be available, so visit the ORDA store (518.523.1420) on Main Street in Lake Placid for up-to-date schedules and ticket information.
