Top Ten San Francisco Getaways


August along the California coast is generally cool and frequently foggy. If you miss the heat, the more inland east bay and south peninsula areas will warm your bones.

  1. Go Jump in a Lake
    August too hot for you? Take a swim in the East Bay's Lake Anza in Tilden Park (510-843-2137) or Lake Temescal in Oakland (510-652-1155).
  2. Ditch the Car
    You can take public transit to the world-famous Marin Headlands. Every Sunday, MUNI bus #76 makes a special run to Fort Cronkhite/Rodeo Beach. Explore the beach, birdwatch at the lagoon, or hike to the top of Hill 88. Call 415-331-1540.
  3. Short Hike/Long Pier
    Hike out to the tip of Point Pinole Regional Shoreline and drop a line in the water from the quarter-mile-long pier. If you don't catch anything, just sniff the salty air and admire the bay view. Call 510-237-6896.

  8. Ride da Bike
