Shoot Through Himalayan Rapids
By Hugh Finlay
Thrash whitewater India style! The Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers, both major tributaries of the mighty Ganges in the Himalayan foothills of Uttar Pradesh, boast Class V rapids—enough to get the adrenaline seriously pumping! The rivers are lined with serene forests, nice beaches, and the occasional village. Rafting is very much a fringe activity here and is all the better for it—the rivers are uncrowded, and chances are you won't see another group the entire time. You will have to make your own arrangements, though the government tourist body, Garwhal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN), can definitely help.
