Florida Fishing Regions
(See Hendry County). Palm Beach County access points to Lake Okeechobee include Slim's Fish Camp, SR 717, Belle Glade; J-Mark, SR 717; Pahokee Harbor Pier at Pahokee State Park; and Belle Glade municipal docks.
Conservation Area 1
A 221-square mile portion of the Everglades managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The area provides good fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, warmouth and catfish. Access is provided at the Loxahatchee Refuge Headquarters off U. S. Hwy. 441 between Boynton Beach Road (SR 804) and Delray Beach Road (SR 806); the Loxahatchee Refuge ramp at 20-mile bend on SR 80; and Loxahatchee Recreation Area, SR 827 at U.S. Hwy. 441 near the Palm Beach/Broward County line.
Generally, Conservation Area 1 fishing is limited to the canal system but offers good fishing for bass and bream. Bass will take crank baits and plastic worms with early spring being the best time of year. Bream are taken on live baits, artificial poppers and other lures. Large catfish can be caught using dead bait on the bottom.
Okeeheelee Fish Management Area
Exit I-95 at Forest Hill Blvd. (west). Park is located just east of the turnpike overpass on the north side of Forest Hill Blvd.
Caloosa Fish Management Area
Exit I-95 at Atlantic Blvd. (west), to Congress Ave. Park is 21/4 miles north on the east side of Congress Ave.
356-acre multi-recreational-use lake with good fishing for largemouth bass, bream, and catfish. A good time for sunshine bass fishing is from October to February. This lake is located within John Prince Park near Lake Worth. Exit I95 at 6th Ave. North or Lantana Rd.
Lake Osborne is an intensively used body of water with water skiers, fishermen, pleasure boaters, swimmers and campers all on the lake at the same time. It offers good fishing, however, for largemouth bass, sunshines, catfish, and bream. Fish early and late or even at night for bass using plastic worms, and casting cut shrimp fished on the bottom. Popular spots are the Sixth Avenue and Lantana Bridges. Bream and crappie abound and will take live bait, jigs, or poppers. Try night fishing, especially during the summer months.
150-acre lake with good populations of largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and sunshine bass. Located within Lake Ida Park, Delray Beach. Exit I-95 at Atlantic Blvd. and north on Congress Ave. Lake Ida is similar to Lake Osbome.
15-acre lake located within Palm Beach Gardens. It offers good fishing for largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and sunshine bass. Exit I-95 at North Palm Beach, then north on MacArthur Boulevard. Lake Catherine is similar to Lake Osbome and Ida and connected to the others by a canal network.
Numerous canals located in southern Florida provide sites for freshwater fishing. Favorite areas are located at water control structures and culverts where fish are congregated in flowing water. Consult local bait and tackle shop operators for specific locations.
