Top Ten Los Angeles Getaways

The dog days of summer are here, but don't let that slow you down. Get out there and experience some of the best of the City of Angels.
  1. Dive the Isle
Call in sick and take a scuba trip to San Clemente Island. The underwater arches, canyons, and kelp forests add up to a long weekend's worth of dives, and the water's as warm as it gets. For trip info, call Horizon Charters: 858-277-7823.
  2. Whoop It Up
The dips and bumps of the Whoop-de-doos Trail are like an amusement park ride for mountain bikers. You'll find the gated entrance on Kenter, north of Sunset, in Brentwood.
  3. Camp the Beach
Now that the early-summer fog has lifted, pitch your tent at sunny Thornhill Broome State Beach (818-880-0350). La Jolla Canyon hiking is just across the street.
  4. Over the Rainbow
The east fork of the San Gabriel River is the place to look for rainbow trout right now. Don't forget your Adventure Pass. Info: 562-590-5020
  5. Covet These Coves
The cool breeze that skips across Lake Casitas (805-370-2301) makes the reservoir a great place to escape the Ojai Valley heat. Rent a kayak to explore the quiet coves.
  6. Hike the Ranch
At the Peter Strauss Ranch, an oak-covered, mile-long loop takes you to the ruins of an early LA resort. The entrance is on Mulholland at Troutdale. Info: 805-370-2301.
  7. Bike It
Escape Culver City on the Ballona Creek Bike Path, which takes you all the way to the end of a jetty at Marina del Rey. Pick up the path on National, just south of Washington.
  8. Try Something New
Looking for a new adventure? Learn to kiteboard at Cabrillo Beach, where the late summer winds never disappoint. For info, call Captain Kirk's: 310-833-3781.
  9. Waterfall Window
Follow the shady Escondido Canyon Park trail to one of LA's last graffiti-free waterfalls. To get there, turn off the PCH at Winding Way and follow the path to the park. Info: 310-589-3200.
  10. P.M. Paddle
Grab a waterproof flashlight and set out for an evening paddle around Newport Harbor, where sea kayakers congregate for summer sunsets. Rentals are available at Southwind Kayaks: 800-768-8494.
