I'll close with a few suggestions on how to protect yourself. Start by accepting one critical fact. A skilled pickpocket can probably snatch the contents of any vulnerable pocket or purse without the owner being aware of it.
Pickpockets may not be common at home but they're a reality of international travel almost everywhere. For the prepared traveler, they're not much of a threat. There is a sure-fire way to know if you are prepared. When you hear a sudden disturbance to your right and look first to your left, you're ready for the road.
