Alaska Voted Adventure Vacation Hot Spot
Quick! When you want to take an adventure trip, what's the first destination that springs to mind?
According to a recent survey of 353 travel agents, if you're like the majority of their clients, you head to the land of the midnight sun, wild rivers, and still-untrammeledland—Alaska.
The "Hot Spots" survey, conducted annually by the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), predicts the coming year's most popular vacation destinations in several different categories. In addition to choosing Alaska as top adventure pick for 1997 (ousting 1996's winner, Colorado), the agents polled named Costa Rica first in eco-tourism, Orlando numero uno in family travel; while London again took top honors in international travel hot spots.
Another big surprise? Besides ecotourism, Costa Rica took the honors as the most popular unusual destination, pulling ahead of Vietnam, which now compares to Belize and Hong Kong.
The United Kingdom is overwhelmingly the most popular destination for international travelers, having a huge lead over France, Mexico and Germany, then Italy.
While announcing the survey results at last October's World Travel Congress in Bangkok, ASTA's President and CEO Jeanne Epping also predicted that Americans in 1997 will travel more overall. This optimism comes in the face of a record-breaking 1996 for the travel industry.
Clearly, while there's no place like home, there's nothing like traveling.
