What to do in Wallis Sands State Beach

Wallis Sands State Beach is one of the many state beaches located along the New Hampshire coast designed as a summertime swimming destination. Like the other coastal parks, this is a day-use facility opening weekends in May and daily beginning mid-June.

Wallis Sands State Beach encompasses 30 acres along the coast of the North Atlantic. Wallis Sands State Beach offers wonderful ocean views, saltwater swimming, a small park store, bathhouse with showers and a lifeguard-protected beach.

North of Wallis Sands is the metropolitan town of Portsmouth providing a variety of night life, restaurants, a wide range of lodging facilities and number of historic sites and museums including Fort Stark, Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion, Wentworth-Gardner House, Governor John Langdon House, The Warner House, John Paul Jones House, Fort Constitution and much more.

Recreation
This popular summertime swimming spot is located above Rye Beach, which also offers another state swimming area along with amusement attractions including the Whale and Island Cruises. These whale-watching excursions offer sights of the historic Isles of Shoals, which is a nine-island group. Viewing wildlife is usually successful providing sights of finback, humpback, minke and dolphin.

Location
The park is located just above Rye along US 1A.

Climate
Winter can be cold with average temperatures ranging around 19 degrees Fahrenheit. The cold temperatures humidity bring heavy, water-laden snow to all parts of the state. Spring begins in mid-March and lasts through May. This time of the year is referred to as mud season in the mountains. The sugar is flowing early in the season and wild flowers bloom toward the end of it. Summer is the busiest season of the year for the tourism industry. This is an excellent time to travel, mountain roads are open and most of the mud has dried. Average summer temperatures range around 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Fall brings the leaf lookers to see the spectacular colors of the deciduous trees. Expect to see bus loads of people enjoying the crisp fall New England weather.
