Who to Go With
Wilderness Safaris is the premier safari company in Namibia, as well as throughout Africa. For 27 years, it has been running trips through Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and the Seychelles. The idea for Wilderness Safaris came about in 1983 when two Botswana-based safari guides wanted to make sure the revenue from their new company stayed in Botswana, when at the time most were based outside of their host country and sourced supplies and help from neighboring countries. With a deep commitment to protecting the land around it, the company considers itself first as a conservation program and second as a safari company.

The first Namibian lodge opened in 1993, and now there are 13 camps scattered throughout the country. They're clean and homey, with an attention to detail that far surpasses anything you’d expect from a tent in the bush—think handwritten notes left on top of your pillow and hot-water bottles left under it. Eighty-five percent of its staff comes from the communities you’re visiting, and the level of training and expertise is astounding. After four-course home-cooked meals and cold washrags after a day in the dust, you'll come to love the staff members’ commitment. But after dinner announcements in their native "click language" and stories of their childhoods around the campfire, you'll come to love them.

There are two Namibian trips to choose from, the Great Namibian Journey and Diverse Namibia. Though both take in many of the same sights, the Great Namibian Journey is three days longer. You can customize your trip to include specific activities you’re more interested in, and your guide will accommodate to match your desires. For example, if you’re interested in learning about the culture of the native people, your guide can make a stop at the Living Museum of the Damara. Or if you want to fit in some extreme sporting, your guide can make arrangements for you to go hot-air ballooning, dune boarding, or surfing.

Wilderness Safaris has an excellent reputation in Namibia, and you’ll soon find that the emblem on the side of your 4x4 is a respected one.
