Block Island, Rhode Island
The Nature Conservancy recently named Block Island, a 14-mile ferry ride from Montauk, New York, as one of its “Last Great Places.” The 10-square-mile island packs a low-key, natural punch: 17 miles of free and public beach line the shore, 30 miles of hiking trails cross the island, and more than 40 percent of the land is protected. Where it isn’t, find scads of B&Bs, wraparound porches, colonial-style taverns, coffee shops, and boutiques—plus an ultra-relaxed vibe. Here, the police officers ride bikes and wear Bermuda shorts.
