People have been making pilgrimages here for years to see Sam Walton’s original five-and-dime, but Bentonville (population 36,000) is now home to the most talked-about new museum in a generation: the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, founded by Alice Walton. It has an $800 million endowment (making it one of the richest museums in the country), 120 acres of walking and biking trails, and a collection to rival anything in New York, Los Angeles, or Washington. Thanks to Wal-Mart, admission is free. And thanks to the museum’s buzz, several restaurants and a B&B have opened in the past year.
