In the northwest of Tasmania, the Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station has historically reported that Tassie has the world’s cleanest air. Fully 20 percent of the island is a World Heritage area, and a third of it is national park. It’s home to the world’s first Green Party. But recently, Australia’s smallest state has opened five-star lodges and vineyards, offered more wildlife tours (to spot the likes of the quoll and the echidna), and established the Museum of Old and New Art on the grounds of a winery in Hobart—it’s now the largest privately funded museum in Australia.
