The government of this Arabian Peninsula state has set a goal to bring in 12 million visitors annually by 2020. Resorts and exclusive housing developments are going up by the tens, and an enormous new airport terminal in Muscat (the capital) will be finished by 2014. Plus, you can now get a visa right at the airport as you enter. But when you think of this part of the world, don’t picture the overdevelopment and conspicuous consumption of Dubai (yet). This mellow nation of 2.8 million has vast deserts, but also dramatic coasts, deep ravines, rocky hills, and more than 500 fortresses and castles.
