For the past ten years, tourism here has been on the rise, and in 2010, its 500,000 residents were outnumbered by visitors for the first time. Don’t worry about crowds, though: Newfie has 20,000 miles of coastline. Try road-tripping the Northern Peninsula, home to the province’s two World Heritage Sites: Gros Morne National Park has glacier-scoured geology and fjords to match Norway’s; L’Anse aux Meadows is a thousand-year-old Viking settlement. They’re linked by the shore-hugging Viking Trail (Route 430). You can also base yourself in Saint John’s, the province’s largest city and capital.
