This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Richard Wagner, and his birthplace, Leipzig, is holding concerts and celebrations all year long. So is Bayreuth, where the baroque 500-seat Margravial Opera House, built in 1744, was just named a New Wonder of the World. Bayreuth is also where Wagner moved in 1871 and built his own opera house, which has been performing his operas exclusively since 1876. Berlin and Dresden are close-by, perfect for a train-travel loop of culture, history, and hipness.
