El Cantil is an ecolodge near the town of Nuqui on the Pacific coast of Colombia. Wooden cottages with porches front the ocean and back up to the rainforest. Meals are served in the restaurant structure at the top of the hill, and activities include diving, whale watching, hiking, fishing, and surfing.

The forests of Colombia are home to an amazing assortment of orchids. There are nearly 3,500 different kinds, including this lovely pink bloom.

In the tiny town of Aruzi, one school teacher and a couple of assistants teach all of the grades. It's hard to keep the children on 'regular' hours, though, because parents living in small, isolated towns often see little value in formal education.

Black and red polka dot poison dart frogs live in the Colombian rainforest and can often be found hiding in thick foliage at the base of trees. Though tiny, less than two inches long and weighing less than an ounce, their skin glands produce one of the strongest toxins in the animal world.

Alongside a flowing river and lush rainforest foliage, a large cement pool contains hot thermal-springs water. Natural mud facials provide soaking visitors with ghoulishly green masks, followed by blissfully soft skin.
