See Wildlife in Kibale
East Africa's Top 20 Adventures
This is no zoo: Seeing chimps in their natural habitat is an experience that's awfully hard to beat. And doing it in an area that's as yet little visited by tourists makes the experience even more exciting. In Kibale National Park in western Uganda, daily guided walks give you the chance to get up close to these alluring creatures. Five groups have been habituated to human contact, and there's a very good chance of spotting one on your first outing—but allow a couple of days to be sure. The walks start from the park headquarters, 20 miles south of the regional headquarters of Fort Portal, and there's a variety of accommodations in the immediate area.
