Visit Chimps in Gombe
East Africa's Top 20 Adventures
Looking for a destination that gets you right off the tourist trail? Then head for this national park in the far northwestern corner of Tanzania on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. Getting there is an adventure in itself, as it involves a lake taxi ride along the lake from Kigoma. The park offers the chance of getting within a few feet of chimpanzees. Jane Goodall first came here to study chimps in the 1950s, and research is still ongoing. You can also swim in the lake or hike through the Gombe forest. Be warned that entry to the park costs $100 per day, but there's a cheap hostel for accommodation.
