Fish Denmark's Skagen

Scandinavia's Top 20 Adventures

Call Denmark a fisher's heaven. The tiny country is located where the North Atlantic meets the brackish water of the Baltic Sea and consists of more than 400 islands. Its waters are home to a variety of fish: cod, mackerel, haddock, baby sharks, and trout. Fishing is good all around Denmark, but some of the best sea fishing is found around the town of Skagen, on the peninsula's northernmost tip. Fish the mighty waters and wander the sandy area for a glimpse of the Tilsandede Kirke, a church buried by the area's powerful drifting sands, or visit Skagen By og Egnsmuseum, a local museum devoted to the town and its fishing industry.

Sea fishing not your bag? Head to Denmark's estuaries, rivers, and lakes, where pike and trout abound. Contact the Danish Association of Anglers ("Danmarks Sportsfiskerforbund") for its CD, which contains all of the information needed to organize a sport fishing trip in Denmark, including a list of waters, maps, and photographs. Fishing licenses have to be obtained locally, and prices vary according to what fish there is in any particular water.
