No question: You need to be in shape to tackle the ascent of Fansipan, Vietnam's highest peak (10,215 feet). Be prepared for bad weather in the country's far north: Warm clothes, good boots, camping equipment, and a guide are essential, as the round trip may take up to five days. You'll also need to carry supplies, so it's best to make arrangements through a local trekking agency. For most of the climb the country is completely bereft of signs of humanity: It's just you, forest, monkeys, birds, and stunning mountain views. The closest town is Sapa, a very tough six-mile hike away. Developed in 1922 as a hill station, Sapa lies in an attractive valley at an elevation of 5,200 feet and is pleasantly cool during the hot season.
