Historically, Querétaro is one of Mexico's most significant cities; it is where the movement for Mexican independence began and38 years laterwas signed into reality through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Almost 70 years later, the Mexican Constitution was signed here as well, cementing Querétaro's national importance. Today, its immaculately maintained buildings, beautiful plazas, and monuments commemorating historic events make it a popular tourist destination. Though a sprawling city, the historical center is small, making it easy to explore on foot.
Inside Tip: On Sunday evenings, locals head to the Plaza de la Independencia, Querétaro's main plaza, to dance to live danzón music, a slow-moving style brought from Veracruz.
