Sail in Pha Nga Bay on Emerald Blue
Southern Thailand's Pha Nga Bay is one of the world's most beautiful and varied cruising grounds, a unique limestone topography with countless little anchorages completely sheltered from the waves in all seasons, covering hundreds of square miles. Its crystal-clear water and thousands of islands, bays, and lagoons have been seen in dozens of films, including The Beach and The Man With the Golden Gun. But the best way to witness this spectacular aquatic world firsthand is by sailboat. Nick Band has been taking people sailing in Thailand for over 20 years. These days, he captains the 48-foot ketch Emerald Blue, and spends most of his time in Pha Nga Bay accompanied by his sole crewmember Porn, a Thai woman who could make a fortune in the States as a chef. Between the two of them, they need no assistance, but if you yearn for a few sailing lessons, you're welcome to join in as Nick takes you from one amazing locale to the next. Emerald Blue costs about $200 per day, and bookings have to be made way ahead.
