Ascend Mount Kenya
East Africa's Top 20 Adventures
How weird is it to find glaciers less than a few miles from the equator? Experience this phenomenon when you climb Mount Kenya. True, it's not as visually spectacular as Kilimanjaro (or as well known), but Mount Kenya, the home of the Kikuyu god Ghai, offers a greater variety of trekking. It also offers serious climbers the chance to strap on their gear and get a real challenge. On the first day of the Naro Moro Route you come across what is known as the Vertical Bog—a 1,500-foot ascent through, well, bog. Point Lenana, one of the mountain's three peaks, is accessible to trekkers, while the two highest peaks require mountaineering skill and equipment. Guides, porters, and equipment are all readily available for hire at Naro Moru, close to the foot of the mountain.
