For fly-fishermen, the Catskills are like coming home. After all, the Beaverkill River, which winds through the mountain range, is the birthplace of American fly-fishing. This gorgeous river first attracted attention in the early 1800s, when people uncovered the abundance of brook trout. It quickly grew into a fishing mecca. The Catskills have remained the ultimate fly-fishing pilgrimage, especially at the Junction Pool and where the Upper Beaverkill joins the Willowemoc in downtown Roscoe. Also, a public stretch from Livingston Manor to Roscoe is regarded as a fly-fishing paradise. To avoid the crowds, head up the Willowemoc, the Beaverkill's less-visited twin sister.
