Sure, Cape Hatteras used to be called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" for all the ships it dragged under its waves. Ironically, however, these same waters have become an East Coast mecca for modern-day ocean adventurers—windsurfers and kayakers. The Atlantic’s strong winds and big swells are the stuff water sport dreams are made of. And the beaches of this protected seascape make for a terrific launching point.
In fact, Hatteras is a go-to destination for most any waterborne activity: the swimming is great and the fishing, world-class. Rather keep your feet dry? The diversity of habitats makes for a terrific wintering area for migrating birds, so whether you're out paddling the waves or shell collecting on sand, check out the plumage darting around overhead—it's some of the best anywhere.
