Hidden Thailand

Golf at Don Muang, Bangkok

If your first image of Thailand from the plane is of people playing golf near the wing tip as you land in Bangkok, consider it an introduction to yet another only-in-Thailand attraction. The Kantarat Course, which is the old Royal Thai Air Force course, starts about a half-mile south of the domestic terminal at Bangkok's International Don Muang Airport. Geographically, it's not the most elaborate golf course in the world…actually it's absolutely flat and pretty damned straight. However, you cannot ignore the rough on this course—the course runs between the two main runways at Don Muang Airport. A friend once sliced into a landing 747 (don't worry, it was a cargo flight), and the wake turbulence of some of the larger planes is said to do funny things to your ball on a really long drive. The cost is approximately $15 per round weekdays, $25 at weekends.
