Beach Vacations to Acapulco, Mexico

Acapulco de Juarez is one of Mexico's longest-established and most famous vacation destinations. It is known for its nightclubs, shops, and restaurants, as well as for the great bay, Bahia de Acapulco, on which it sits. The Sierra Madre del Sur mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for this city that is built into and over hills and cliffs. Many of the city's most photographed buildings seem to be perched precariously on steep hillsides, with grand views from many restaurants and hotels.
Yet Acapulco seems stuck in the glory of its Hollywood past, when the great stars of the time vacationed there. It is a bit tattered around the edges and some of the Golden Zone hotels could use some work. The bay provides spectacular sunsets, but it is often not clean enough for swimming.
Fortunately, spectacular cliff-top pools and lavish grounds and interior spaces at fine hotels above the bay still lend a feeling of elegance to the city. When the Punta Diamante area was developed a few miles from the Golden Zone, it did a lot to rev things up and give Acapulco a new caché with visitors. The water at Punta Diamante is fabulous, and the resorts there have much to offer. Families will not lack for things to do.
For history, there's Fuerte de San Diego; for water-park fun, there's CiCi and Aqua Planet, each one a bit different from the other. The famous cliff divers are still a big draw, and you simply cannot leave without seeing them. If you like thrills or are traveling with teens or young adults, be sure to book an outing with Shotover Jet, operators of an excellent jet-boat tour.
