Nature's Star Turns (cont.) 8. Guyana: Downstream Amazon The interior of this country is one of the most thickly forested of South America, and certainly much more dense than Brazil. Bookended by the basins of the Orinoco to the northwest and the Amazon to the southeast, Guyana lives up to its Amerindian nametranslated to "Land of Many Waters." The interior is either thick rainforest or broad Africa-like savanna, called the Rupununi. Giant protected tracks, like the million-acre Iwokrama Rainforest Preserve, insure territory for large roaming animals, like harpy eagles, tapir and jaguar. And since this is a former British colony, many Amerindians also speak English and some welcome visitors into their village for overnights. Safer than Peru, but naturally just as wild. 9. Honduras: Rainforests and Island Reefs La Mosquitia region is one of the largest untouched natural corridors left in Central America, once part of a land bridge that channeled animals between North and South America. See primary growth rainforests, pine savannahs, and coastal lagoons, some with manatee. Around you, watch for monkeys, wild pigs, jaguar, toucans, red and green macaws. Ride a motorized canoe (called a "tuk tuk") across broad lagoons, like Ibans, and visit Miskito communities, making your way into one of the deepest and wildest jungles outside of Africa. When you are jungled out, journey from Ceiba out to the Bay Islands and dive the plunging coral walls. 10. Himalayas: Mountaineering in India's "Little Tibet" Fly to Leh, capitol of Ladakh. At 12,000 feet, acclimate under snow-capped peaks, amidst the exotic bazaars and the deserted Leh Palace. Then set off on a number of hikes and climbs, depending on your skill level. Climb the 16,000 foot high Ganda La and follow a riverside trail down the Markha Valley. Read Into Thin Air. If you are still interested in Everest, there are climbs that don't take you all the way to the summit.
