What to do in Sweitzer Lake State Park

Sweitzer Lake State Park is located in the arid region southeast of Delta along Highway 50. This is a day-use area open year round. The 137 surface-acre lake is the main attraction. Unfortunately this lake was built on an alluvial plain created by the Deltas of the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers. Selenium from the stone on which the lake was built has been found in dangerous levels in the fish. This makes them dangerous for human consumption.

The water is safe in which to play and many visitors enjoy the refuge of Sweitzer Lake during the hot summer days that are a given in this arid region. The lake lies in a scenic spot with the high country of the West Elk Mountains, San Juan Mountains and Grand Mesa in clear view.

Four picnic areas surround the lake on the western and southern shores. These area provide 32 individual sites. A boat ramp lies at the western edge of the lake east of the dam. A no wake zone lies on the eastern edge of the lake, there to protect waterfowl habitat. A trail along the northern shore of the lake provides access to the waterfowl area. Trailer camping is permitted in the parking area near the park entrance.

Recreation
Picnicking and boating are the most popular activities at Sweitzer Lake. Water skiing, jet skiing and swimming are also permitted in the lake. The Audubon Society visits the park, as well as waterfowl hunters, for the excellent variety of fowl that are drawn to the park each year. Fishing is permitted at the lake, but please heed the warning above and release your catch.

Location
Sweitzer Lake lies southeast of Delta on an alluvial plain created by the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers. It is fed by Garnet Ditch. This region is arid and dry during the summer months.

Climate
Climate conditions in Colorado should be taken seriously throughout the state. Snow and ice are common on roads and trails from mid-October through late April. In the summer months, snow is still possible but less common. Varying conditions throughout a given day can be expected throughout the year. Remember that summer days can typically have beautiful sunny mornings and short sudden thunderstorms in the afternoon. The sun burns easily during the hot summer days in this high country. Be sure to pack sunscreen and water on your trip to Sweitzer Lake State Park.
