Half Dutch, half French, and all Caribbean, the island of St. Maarten/St. Martin provides a unique bipolar vacation-two distinct European cultures inhabiting the smallest landmass shared by two countries, united by West Indian rhythms and spices and ringed with some of the region's finest beaches. The Dutch side encompasses two-fifths of the 37-square-mile island, but border formalities are a non-issue when you drive to the French side-there's little more than a welcome sign in either direction. The island's 100,000 residents are said to represent 140 nationalities, having emigrated from across the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond, all partaking in the island's energetic, tourist-based economy.
