What to do in St. John

St. John, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is in some ways very much like its Caribbean neighbors. Sunny and hot for most of the year, the island features exquisite beaches, crystal-clear water, and excellent snorkeling and diving. But unlike most of its Caribbean counterparts, St. John is composed primarily of preserved land. The acreage for Virgin Islands National Park was set aside in 1956 thanks to a donation by Laurance Rockefeller to the National Park Service. Roughly 60 percent of the island falls within the park, giving St. John a pleasantly undeveloped feel. Most of the island’s restaurants, bars, and shops are located in the town of Cruz Bay. It’s in the westernmost part of the island, so if you’re staying elsewhere, you’ll need a car to frequent it. But trading proximity to town for closeness to nature is a fair deal.
