The Virgin Islands National Park covers almost two-thirds of St. John and includes hiking trails, historic ruins, beaches, and offshore coral reefs.
Snorkel in Trunk Bay, where an excellent self-guided snorkel trail runs 225 yards through shallow, warm, and crystal-clear ocean waters.
Hike the short paths leading to the ruins of Annaberg Plantation, where Danish settlers left the remains of a windmill, sugar factory, and rum still. Nearby trails offer longer treks along the north coast and to the interior hills and valleys.
Get an overview of the island and park by taking a guided tour on an open-air safari bus from the ferry dock in Cruz Bay, the main town and a bustling center of tourist activity.
Make your first stop the National Parks Visitor Center on the waterfront near the ferry dock in Cruz Bay. Pick up maps and ask the knowledgeable park rangers about ranger-led activities within the park.
Stay at one of St. John's eco-resorts, like Maho Bay Camp or Estate Concordia Preserve. The tent-like cabins offer amenities such as kitchens and composting toilets in a close-to-nature environment.
