What to do in Cape Town
Okay, brass tacks: Cape Town is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It’s like Sydney, plus granite-gray mountains. It’s like San Francisco, plus white sand beaches. Or Maine, plus antelopes and ostriches. While it’s a far cry from the endless, dry bush of The Gods Must Be Crazy , the warning signs about baboons are a clue that you’re not that far from the wild. Not many cities have such a variety of cuisine; you’ll find Afro-Asian, California-Italian, Mediterranean-Jewish, and north Indian. But don’t get lulled into thinking that the complications of apartheid are in the past—drive from Clifton, one of the most expensive perches on the continent, toward Stellenbosch, passing miles of squatter camps. Boat out to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and be back in time to catch the sunset from the top of Table Mountain.
