What to do in Sky Meadows State Park

Sky Meadows State Park is located in Clarke and Fauquier counties on the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains and just an hour's drive from Washington, D.C. This park has been developed for equestrians, hikers and picnickers. The rolling pastures, peaceful woodlands and scenic vistas make this a popular destination for urbanites escaping the bustling Washington, D.C. area.

The park also has one of the areas few access points to the Appalachian Trail along with a primitive hike-in campground. Bridle trails total 5 miles in length. The visitor center is located in the historic Mount Bleak House giving the visitor a taste of what life was like for a middle class farm family during the 1850s. Group camping, quaint picnic area, charming gift shop, stocked fishing pond, and restored meeting house fashions a memorable experience. The park's highest point is 1,840 feet and the lowest is 640 feet. Horse stables are available for short-term rental. Visitors may obtain park and trail maps at the park entrance (contact station), the back porch of the visitor center, and the gift shop / office.

Recreation
Primitive camping, group camping, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and sight-seeing are the most popular recreations enjoyed at Sky Meadows.

The local area is steeped in Civil War history and hosts many quaint villages with lovely bed and breakfast inns. The Virginia State Arboretum is within a few minutes drive as are some popular wineries.

Location
Sky Meadows State Park is located two miles south of Paris, Virginia or seven miles north of I-66, Exit 23 from Rt. 17. The park entrance is on Rt. 710 (Edmonds Lane).

Climate
Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The central to northern portion of the state has winter temperatures averaging 34 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit (1 to 2 degrees Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The central to northern portion of Virginia generally experiences temperatures ranging from 76 to above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable.
