Overview by Megan Michelson

Boasting the most snowfall in Colorado, Wolf Creek Ski Area gets an impressive 465 inches of natural snow each year. That's 55 percent more than Aspen and Breckenridge. So why haven't you heard of Wolf Creek? Because it's tucked away in southern Colorado, a winding five-hour drive from Denver. Its location keeps the traffic away, which means that lift lines are rare and face shots last all day long.

Established in 1939, Wolf Creek has a historic charm to it: a rustic lodge that serves lunch items like homemade green chile stew and peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches, and just seven lifts, only one of which is high-speed. It's the kind of place where terrain parks still don't exist and the cafeteria doesn't accept credit cards. But behind its cozy, family-friendly atmosphere, it serves up some of the best snow and most adventurous terrain in a state known for great skiing. For beginners, there's the Nova Chair, a short ride to the top of a seemingly flat surface. Intermediates will be happiest on the Raven Lift and the Bonanza Chair, which offers a few long, groomed runs with friendly-sounding names like Powder Puff and Charisma. Expert riders should tap Treasure and Alberta chairlifts, where tree-skiing and open bowls abound.

Most of the expert runs tend to be short, but if you're up for a hike, there's plenty of access to steeper terrain, sometimes just a five-minute walk from the top of the lift. From the Treasure Lift, hike up to Prospector or head out to 11,900-foot Alberta Peak and drop down into a stash of wind-loaded powder. From Alberta Chair, boot pack to a rickety staircase reminiscent of the Italian Dolomites and take in the panoramic

Traveler Reviews of Wolf Creek

Pieter rates Wolf Creek
Simply the best early-season snow in Colorado. Kind of stinks if there's no powder, though.
