Overview by Ben Raphael

A huge mountain with an intimate village, Panorama has carved out a niche for itself as a low-key, family-oriented destination resort. A little too far for day trippers from Calgary (three hours from the Calgary airport), and without the glitz to draw huge numbers from afar, this resort is perfect for vacationers looking to get away from big crowds without sacrificing quality. Lift lines are rare and the mountain's whopping 4,000-foot vertical drop and nearly 3,000 acres of terrain keep skiers both happy and well spread out. The mountain is lined with ski-in, ski-out accommodations, and the pedestrian village bulges with shops and cozy restaurants and pubs. You'll also notice a lack of loud nightclubs, making it all that much easier to relax after a long day on the slopes.

The 1,000-acre Taynton Bowl is of interest to expert skiers. One of its standout features is its choose-your-own-adventure quality: It remains ungroomed, naturally gladed, and dotted with small cliff bands, chutes, and spines that make intermediate and advanced skiers giddy with anticipation. A local favorite is Never Never Land. The farthest run from the lift in Taynton Bowl, this run ducks in and out of trees for 3.4 leg-burning miles.

And nothing says Canadian Rockies like heli-skiing. So if you're into floating turns through deep fluffy powder, you're in luck. RK Heli-Ski offers daytrips from Panorama into the Bugaboos, one of the biggest heli-ski playgrounds in the world. Panorama also prides itself on the variety of other activities at hand such as snowshoeing, tobogganing, and mountaintop fondue dinners at the Summit Hut. The Greywolf Nordic Center also harbors 12.8 miles of cross-country skiing, a nice change of pace from downhilling.
