Overview by Steve Giordano
There are few places in the world that offer 360-degree skiing around a steep volcanic peak—Mount Bachelor is one of them. Down the front of the mountain are wide bowls and tree-bordered trails, around the back are vast open snowfields. Above the tree line (up to 9,000 feet), are chutes, faces, and bowls served by the Summit Express Chair. Below treeline, Mount Bachelor has plenty of terrain for all types of skiers. There are gentle groomed slopes, an abundance of woods, and minefields of moguls. The untamed backcountry, called the Northwest Territory, has 500 acres of lift-served tree skiing and rugged trails.
Storms and low visibility often close the summit lift in mid-winter, but all that powder pays off well into the season. By March, the snow usually falls at night; by April, the days are warm and sunny; and the skiing on Bachelor is exciting into May.
