Overview by Peter Van Noordennen
It's somewhere around the mid-run sugar shack stop for tire d'erablea maple taffy made from hot, locally tapped syrup poured onto a trough of snow to cool and rolled, lollipop-style, onto a stickthat it dawns on you: Skiing in Quebec isn't just a colder, Frenchier version of Vermont. Mont Sainte Anne, a small but scrappy ski hill 30 minutes outside of Quebec's capitol city, has its own identity that is neither the French Alps nor the Green Mountains. Taking its cues from lively Quebec City, North America's oldest municipality, where French troops built a garrison in 1608, Mont Sainte Anne is a family-friendly place that isn't afraid to let its hair down, with hot tubs and live bands commonly lining the base area.
Up on the mountain, however, you'll find quiet glades full of beeches and other East Coast hardwoods. There's not much of a big-mountain feel here, but views of the south side of the icy St. Lawrence River offer a unique perspective. Challenging slopes do exist, like Le Belle and Le Bussionniere (Beauty and the Beast, respectively), compact glades with 20- to 25-degree pitches that will have your quads screaming for a hot tub by day's end. The long and winding Le Foreit Noir (The Black Forest) is like skiing a black-and-white photograph, with gnarled trees giving an eerie contrast to the plentiful snow drifts. Night skiing on 17 lighted trails is a worthwhile experience so long as you can stand the coldthe average nightly low in January is 18 degrees Fahrenheit.
They have groomed slopes in spades. Long, winding runs like La Pichard are buffed with aplomb and serve as the perfect place to perfect your Stem Christie.
