The long and winding Le Foreit Noir (The Black Forest) is like skiing a black-and-white photograph, with gnarled trees giving an eerie contrast to the plentiful snow drifts. Eighty percent of the trails receive some man-made snow. Mont Sainte Anne's ski school is one of the best in the business, catering to adults as well as children.

East Coast mogul addicts will find plenty to do here, too. Le Beauregard, along the western edge of the mountain's south side, has numerous side trails and wide-open, ungroomed lanes with bumps of all shapes and sizes.

Eight eateries serve up a selection of foods, from pizza and pastas to fondue to poutine (French fries and cheese curds covered in gravy; it's the signature ski food of Quebec).

Chateau Mont Sainte Anne, the resort's main hotel, is hardly a chateau at all. This massive, poured-concrete bunker of a building is actually cozier than it sounds, with a cavernous bar and restaurant stocked with fireplaces and overstuffed lounge chairs. Rooms on the top level are newly redone, ultra-modern penthouse suites. A collection of small hot tubs outside fill up quickly.
