If the Gods of Winter were looking for the perfect model for future ski resorts, Copper would be their template. The stats listed below paint part of the picture, but the geographical composition of the mountain itself, which naturally segregates skiers of different levels, really elevates Copper to near-iconic status. The resort intuitively funnels novice skiers and boarders to the west, intermediates to the center, and experts to the east and the above-treeline bowls off Copper Peak, Tucker Mountain, and Union Peak. This means beginners dont have to contend with a stream of intimidating double-black daredevils on their training ground, while experts will ski alongside like-skilled counterparts.
Whatever your pleasure, Copper provides, from gentle groomer-cruisers like Jacques Pique to glade skiing, bump runs, and wide-open bowls. Experts thirsting for a taste of the backcountry without fully committing, meanwhile, can hop the free snowcat shuttle service, which runs skiers and boarders to the ridge of Tucker Mountain, where a 20-minute walk reaches some truly spectacular bowls that drop into winter-white glade skiing. This service alone makes Copper a resort worth visitingbut get there early; the cat stops running at 2 p.m. each day. Groms and freestylers can take their pick of four terrain parks (including one dedicated to kids). Top-notch daycare facilities, kids ski schools, and a modest 75-mile drive from Denver (and easy access from I-70) also make it one of Colorados most convenient destination resorts. And once you arrive, Copper rolls out all the stops to make you comfortable, from free shuttle services to gratis

The recently renovated Copper Mountain Village now offers additional dining, shopping, and accommodation. Additional lodging is popping up almost constantly, and weekend nights and spring break see floods of 20somethings in the main village. Additional activities include tubing, dinner sleigh rides, snowmobiling, winter fly-fishing, paragliding, mountaineering, and athletic club and spa facilities. For mid-mountain dining, the café-style Solitude Grill is tops, especially the Cajun-style buffet with stick-to-your-ribs dishes like chicken-and-sausage jambalaya and crawfish gumbo. JJs Rocky Mountain Tavern in the East Village, a traditional chop house with the expected slice of kitschy mining décor, is tops for a raucous time, while the C.B. Grille in the main village offers a classier venue for appetizers and full meals.
With a multitude of convenient ski, snowboard, and apres-ski options available, its no wonder Copper is consistently rated as one of Ski Magazines top resorts in the west. The only possible downside is Coppers appeal to the boarding and 20-something crowd; if youre seeking something a tad more conservative, bed down at the lodging at East Village, which is removed from the potential of the main village.
