Overview by Elizabeth Zektick

Breckenridge is a charming Victorian town with lift-served skiing on four interconnected mountains. There’s easy-street skiing and snowboarding on Peak 9, tough stuff on Peak 10, and splendid backcountry-style skiing on Peak 7—155 trails in total, with a vertical rise of over 3,000 feet. There's also the Imperial Express SuperChair, the highest chairlift in North America. Given all that, it’s no surprise that this Vail-owned resort is the second-most visited in the U.S.

This is also Summit County’s brashest and liveliest resort, with abundant non-ski and apres-ski options. The surrounding town is the largest historic district in the state, with live theater, movie theaters, historic tours, mining for gold, and 79 restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. There’s a recreational center with free weights, aerobic classes, two climbing walls, an indoor pool, two hot tubs, and racquetball and basketball courts.

Twenty-five acres have been dedicated to five terrain parks, including the Freeway Terrain Park, consistently ranked one of the best on the continent by Snowboarder, Transworld, and Snowboarding magazines. The parks cater to beginners through experts, and there are two halfpipes (one 14-foot-high and a 22-foot superpipe).

The cons: While it’s great that Breckenridge is so close to Denver (85 miles west via I-70 and Colorado 9), the proximity can cause weekend crowds.

Traveler Reviews of Breckenridge

Kevin rates Breckenridge
First the negative: Breckenridge can be a great mountain, and some of the terrain (particularly the expert terrain located off of Imperial Chair) is some of the best in Summit County. My major complaint is that it can be the most crowded Summit County ski area on a busy weekend, and some of the best terrain is only accessible by older, slower lifts. There are currently plans for expanding the mountain which would go a long way to alleviating the chief issue with Breckenridge, but until that happens I would recommend a couple other ski areas in the area over Breckenridge. It can also be a bit of a hassle trying to traverse the mountain. I's a lot better than it used to be with the Peak 8 Superconnect in place, but you're still better off just picking one section of the mountain to ski and sticking to it. Now the positive: Breckenridge probably has the most diverse terrain of any Summit County ski area. There's basically something (usually several things) for skiers of every ability level and the town of Breckenridge has the liveliest apres ski scene around. If you're talking about skiing it mid-week when the crowds are thinner, I'd push my rating up to 5-stars. Pros: Well maintained, Good tours. Cons: Long lines.

Had a blast learning to board there. The runs were great for beginners and the powder was plentiful. The town and the slopes are very easy to get to. It is also super easy to walk to town for food after a hard day's work. Pros: Easy to access, Well maintained, Short lines.

Took a trip with 8 friends this January. Everyone had a blast. Stayed in a Ski in condo, plenty of terrain variety for all from beginner to advanced. It was busy, but a holiday weekend, thus the lines were long. The higher you got on the mountain the shorter the wait. The town is great as well. Plenty to do, great bars, and anything that is forgotten can easily be found. Pros: Easy to access, Well maintained. Cons: Long lines.
