Overview by Elizabeth Zektick
Just a short trip outside Jackson, Black Mountain Resortnestled in the Mount Washington Valleyhas been revived by new family ownership dedicated to eliminating the most infuriating aspect of skiing: high cost. In business for more than 60 years, Black Mountain is a laid-back, modest resort popular with families for its bargains and beginner trails. The Family Passport is just $119 for two adults and two kids during all holiday periods, and only $99 midweek. The base lodge food is not only inexpensive, its decent, and a day care center and a variety of kids programs make it easy for parents to break away from their brood and cut some turns mano a mano.
Whats great about Blackbesides the priceis the number of options available for the indecisive. Theres a halfpipe and two terrain parks, ice skating, sleigh rides, movies, and factory outlets nearby. But with a vertical rise of 1,110 feet, breathtaking views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range, and a lovely base lodge bar, the best aspects of Black Mountain are enjoyed while on the slopes, or taking a break from em. The hills southern exposure also keeps the temps more moderate than other resorts on the East Coast.
