Overview by Elizabeth Zektick

Directly north of Casper and Hogadon at the base of 9,300-foot High Park Peak, sits Big Horn Mountain Resort. Its geographic position in the heart of the Big Horn Range on the banks of Meadowlark Lake puts the resort smack-dab in the center of some of the world’s lightest and driest powder—and high-quality snowmaking assures that even off days are spot-on throughout the season.

Though the conditions, an 800-foot vertical rise, and a gloriously modest $40 adult lift ticket make for alluring qualities, Big Horn’s biggest draw may be its outstanding snowboarding facilities. Recent additions to the property include mountain cliffs, a new terrain park, and the state’s longest half pipe. Resort instructors have also developed a new method to match their unrivaled terrain. The Big Horn Snowboard Technique will teach you how to snowboard without getting bashed and bruised in the process. The more experienced, meanwhile, are habitually drawn to the annual Big Horn Open, held during the first two weekends in March. The competition features the Giant Slalom, the Super G Slalom, the RailJam, and Big Air Competition.

And while the number of slopes clock in at 20—modest when compared to the 116 runs at Jackson Hole—a 1.5-mile length more than makes up for a seeming paucity of runs.

As for lodging, take your pick: Big Horn offers three recently upgraded on-site facilities; rustic cabins, cottages, and motel rooms are available, as well as
