What to do in Skidway Island State Park

Located near historic Savannah in the Coastal Region of Georgia, this 588-acre barrier island has both salt and freshwater due to estuaries and marshes that flow through the area. The park borders Skidaway Narrows, a part of the intercoastal waterway. Natural attractions include two nature trails that offer sights of marshes, live oaks, cabbage-palmettos and longleaf pines. Abundant wildlife inhabits the park offering quiet visitors an opportunity to see deer, raccoon, shore birds and fiddler crabs. Observation towers provide another chance for visitors to search for wildlife on this beautiful island. In addition to the nature trails, an array of facilities, most ADA accessible, offer the visitor a variety of outdoor recreations.

Recreation
Skidway State Park boasts natural beauty, wildlife viewing and bird watching. A museum and interpretive center gives the visitor an idea of the area's natural history and a taste of the sights they might see while visiting the park. Overnight accommodations include an 88-site campground suitable for both tenters and Rvers. A child's playground, Jr. Olympic swimming pool and picnic area with pavilions are nearby. Environmental education is an important issue at Skidway. Many of the programs and trails focus on the importance of preserving our natural areas. A Colonial Coast Birding Trail Program, the 1-mile Sandpiper Nature Trail and the 3-mile Big Ferry Trail are preludes to the seasonal events that include the Coastal Birds Program, the Archaeology Awareness Celebration and the Canoeing Tidal Estuaries Program. A historic feature of the park is a February celebration of a Civil War Encampment.
