What to do in Sampson State Park

Sampson State Park was once a naval training station, then an Air Force base before becoming a state park. Wildflowers, grasses, shrubs and trees on flat, rolling woodlands are now characteristic of the park. Located in the heart of Finger Lakes, Sampson State Park rests on the eastern shore of Lake Seneca offering a 123-berth marina, electric campsites, picnic areas, playground and playing fields that include tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, a swimming beach and a recreation building.

Sampson State Park was once the site of a military station and today serves as a recreation destination for many. The land is now graced with grasses, wildflowers, shrubs and trees. Wildlife enjoy calling this area home. Boaters and land lovers enjoy the area too. A focal point of the park is the 123-berth marina and the 344-site campground with electric hookups. There is a wide range of day use amenities; practically something to meet every taste and desire. The Park also boasts a museum relating to the history of the Naval and Air Force Bases that were once placed at the park before it was aqquired by the state of New York.

Recreation
Sampson State Park is a favorite destination for many. This park offers a smorgasbord of recreation opportunities and facilities including a boat launch, power boating, sailing, wind surfing, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, swimming beach, children's playground, tennis courts, recreation programs, play fields, volleyball court and basketball court A variety of winter sports include cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling. Seneca Lake is well-known for its trout fishing opportunities.

Sampson State Park is located along the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, 11 miles south of Geneva. The park may be accessed off SR 96A.

Climate
The Sampson State Park area experiences average January temperatures above 22 degrees Fahrenheit (above -6 degrees Celsius). It is important to note that this area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (around 22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
